Felix, a traveling storyteller, wanders into a land of fairy tales—wherein the waterfalls are gold, the sky is stained glass, and the nearby city, Syne, has doors that can lead anywhere. With only the faded picture of an unknown woman, Felix sets out to understand how and why he has traveled to this bizarre new world.

Diana, a reclusive ex-fairy, enjoys life in the Walking Woods, where time does not pass. She sustains herself with the mystic rhimes of the fairy tradition, but things are changing. A long-lost sister of the Circle—an abandoned fairy order that guarded the Tree of Life—surfaces with an unavoidable message:
